Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (33-4-1, 18 KOs) made weight on Friday for his fight against Argentinian David Peralta (25-2-1, 14 KOs) this Saturday night on Premier Boxing Champions on Spike at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
The 5’8” Guerrero weighed at 146.8 pounds. His taller opponent Peralta, 5’10”, weighed in at 147lbs. Guerrero, 33, is supposed to win this fight, but it’s hard to say whether he will. Guerrero wants a rematch against WBC 147lb belt holder Danny Garcia, who beat him by a 12 round unanimous decision last January.
Guerrero is in denial about that loss, as he thinks he should have won. I don’t think he did, but Guerrero believes he did enough to deserve the win and he wants a rematch. Garcia doesn’t give rematches nowadays. Once he beats you, he moves on permanently.
Guerrero has lost a lot from his game in the last four years since beating Andre Berto in November 2012. Guerrero’s one-sided 12 round decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May 2013 was for all intents purposes the beginning of the end for “The Ghost.”
Guerrero made a big mistake after the Mayweather fight in taking 14 months off from the ring rather than staying active. He missed out on two or three fights during that time, and when he did come back against Japanese fringe contender Yoshihiro Kamegai in June 2014, he wasn’t the same fighter that he had been two years earlier.
Guerrero barely beat Kamegai by a 12 round decision, and he took a real bad beating in getting the win. Guerrero followed that up with a 12 round decision loss to Keith “One Time’ Thurman last year in a fight where Guerrero was dropped hard in the 9th. Guerrero then won a controversial 10 round decision to journeyman Aaron Martinez last year in June. Martinez knocked Guerrero down hard in the 4th round and had him looking like he was unconscious for a moment as he was falling to the canvas.
Super middleweight Alfredo Angulo (24-5, 20 KOs) weighed in at 164.8 pounds for his 10 round fight against journeyman Freddy Hernandez (33-8, 22 KOs). Hernandez, 37, weighed in at 163lbs. This is a must win for both guys, as their careers have tanked big time in the last six years, especially with Hernandez. He’s lost seven out of his last eleven fights.
You can arguably blame those defeats on Hernandez being matched against one tough opponent after another from 2010 to 2014. It wasn’t until 2015 where Hernandez was finally given a break by having him matched against weaker guys so that he could get a win. Hernandez’s losses in the last six years have come against Andre Berto, Erislandy Lara, Delvin Rodriguez, Francisco Santana, Julian Williams and Brad Solomon. He did defeat Luis Collazo five years ago in 2011 by a 10 round decision.
Angulo, a 2004 Olympian, has seen his career go down the drain with losses to Kermit Cintron, James De La Rosa, James Kirkland, Erislandy Lara and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Three of those defeats came in a row from 2013 to 2014. Angulo did win his last two fights against Delray Raines and Hector Munoz.
Angulo doesn’t have the hand speed to compete against the best in the 168lb division, and he’s going to have problems when he’s eventually matched against someone good again. He might be able to beat Hernandez on Saturday, but that’s still a big if. Hernandez is a fairly good fighter, and he’s got better hand speed than Angulo. If Hernandez can handle Angulo’s heavy hands, he might be able to pound out a decision.
Unbeaten middleweight Terrell Gausha (18-0, 9 KOs) weighed in at 155 pounds for his scheduled 10 round fight against Steve Hernandez (16-2, 13 KOs). Hernandez weighed in at 163lbs. Hernandez was beaten by Christopher Pearson by a 10 round unanimous decision in December 2014. Since that fight, Hernandez has fought just once in besting Jorge Melendez by a 2nd round knockout last December.
Gausha, a 2012 U.S Olympian, has recent wins over Orlando Lora, Said El Harrak and Eliezer Gonzalez.
